Getting Hens Ready for Winter!

Heat Lamp Installed! It hangs above the hen condo and there is chicken wire across the entire top. The lamp is secure but, just in case, if it was to fall, it would fall on the chicken wire and not inside where it could potentially set the shavings on fire.

Have the heat lamp plugged into this system where I can set the temperature range. It has a temperature probe inside the hen condo. If it works well, I can be sure they’re not getting too warm, or too cold!

Covered the wire and probe so the hens won’t be able to get at them!

And set the temperature for the heat lamp. It will turn on at 31 degrees F or less and turn off when it hits 33 degrees F. Might adjust it more once the temperatures start to drop low enough for the heat lamp to be triggered. It has been unusually warm this week! But it’s a starting point. I use it to prevent frostbite. I don’t want it too warm as they need to acclimate to colder temps for when they go outside the hen condo to eat and drink, etc. I have a generator so it always has power to it.

And the heaters are set up for the water basin and bucket! Ready for winter!

And I have my LED light set up on a timer. It turns on at 4 am and turns off at 7 am. Extra light for the hens during the winter months means more eggs, and more time to eat and drink! Here in New England the winter daylight is so short! This extends their day 3 hours.

And the power supply with timer is here. Stays nice and dry here. I have some wood above these that pushes the plastic out and away from the power source.
